Mice are not simply “small rats.” They are an entirely different biological entity with unique behaviors, extreme entry capabilities, and specific viral risks. If you try to treat a mouse infestation using standard rat-proofing techniques, the mice will walk right past your defenses.

In California, homeowners primarily battle two highly distinct species of mice. To effectively stop an invasion and protect your family from foodborne or aerosolized pathogens, you must first properly identify your target.

Step 1: Identify Your Invader

Select the option below that best matches the species you have seen or the location of your infestation.

The Critical Difference: The 1/4-Inch “Dime Test”

The single biggest mistake homeowners make when performing DIY exclusion is underestimating the anatomy of a mouse.

A mouse’s skeletal structure, specifically its ribcage, is highly flexible and collapsible. If a mouse can fit its skull through a gap, the rest of its body will follow. As a rule of thumb, an adult mouse can squeeze through any crack, hole, or gap that is 1/4-inch wide. This is roughly the diameter of a standard U.S. dime.

If you are attempting to patch exterior holes with 1/2-inch chicken wire or expander foam, the mice will either squeeze right through it or chew it away in seconds. You must use 1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth or tightly packed copper mesh.

The Multiplication Threat

Rats cause massive structural damage, but mice cause rapid numerical overwhelm. There is rarely “just one mouse” in a home.

  • Gestation: A female mouse is pregnant for only 19 to 21 days.
  • Litter Size: She will give birth to 5 to 6 pups per litter, and can mate again immediately after giving birth.
  • Sexual Maturity: The pups are ready to begin breeding their own litters in just 35 to 40 days.

This means a single pregnant female that enters your kitchen appliance void in October can result in a colony of over 50 mice by December. Fast, aggressive trapping is required.

Safe Droppings Cleanup

Mice are incontinent, meaning they leave trails of urine and small, rice-sized droppings wherever they walk. Because California deer mice carry Hantavirus, you must never sweep or vacuum these droppings dry. Doing so launches viral particles into the air. Always soak the area with a bleach-water solution for 10 minutes before wiping them up with a paper towel.

Stop the Colony from Multiplying

Because they breed so rapidly and can fit through impossibly small gaps, professional exclusion is required to permanently seal a home. Compare audited pricing from California’s top-rated SPCB exterminators today.
